Is there any way I can change the date so that it does not display with the month first in the block.

e.g. for April 20th it looks like this: 04/20 whereas I would prefer it to be displayed like this: 20/04

Sure,

You can change the display of this in your regular time-and-date settings of drupal. It uses the short format. You can find it here @ admin/settings/date-time of your website.
