I want to set up a personal website on my home server for friends and family to access. I will also be hosting a forum for a men's group. What I want is to be able to limit access to the site by username and password (you have to login before you can see anything at all), and I want to be able to keep entire sections of the site invisible to different users. For example, my cousin would login and see posts tagged for family, but would not see posts tagged for men's group. Links for the family sites, forums, and galleries would appear for those logins, but logins from the men's group would not see any of the family stuff, just the men's group links and posts.

Can Drupal do this? If so, can someone point me in the direction of what modules I might want/need to install to make this happen?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Sure drupal can do this, but since they appear to be totally unrelated sites I'd create 2 different sites. Otherwise you could use og or one of the access control modules to keep content separated.

Drupal can definatelly do this. Drupal commons will help quickstart the process.
