Hi,

Commons Origins 7.x-3.0 is quite close to what I would like to use however I would like to make some minor changes to the theme but don't want those changes to be over written by any updated versions of Commons Origins.

What's the best way to proceed?

You'll want to make a subtheme of Commons Origins.

The process of doing so is outlined in #31 of #1380848: making a subtheme of commons_origins?.
