New drupal'er here. Just getting started with the framework.

What I'm trying to accomplish, is to set up a page with a view (already done) of content. Then I would like to have in the left margin ways to filter the view in the content pane. I would like to have multiple filters like filter by category or filter by topic (or I may think of other filter types).

Can anyone get me started on what components I need to be looking at? I think I need to set up the taxonomy to have categorized terms. Then how would I create an object in one block that filters an object in a different block?
