I would assume that it's a move to prevent others from creating other stuff and calling it Drupal... as the name becomes more recognized others would otherwise try to capitalize on the name. Pretty soon you would get the "Drupal Latte" at starbucks (ok, maybe not).

Dries isn't going to be a PHD student forever, this helps raise his profile a bit which will help when it's time for him to get a job. As the creator of Drupal, he is certainly entitled to it.
