Is Drupal something for me?

Hi all

I'm planning on starting a swedish community for laptops. Consumer tips and general discussion. I want people to be able to post reviews, news and such on the site. Not just through forum threads. I want people to be able to have Profiles with lots of information as well.

I've been looking at both Drupal and Joomla, and both needs a lot of time to figure out, so I want to decide before I dive into something this big.

All tips are welcome and greatly appreciated!

/Adam

Ps. I am currently a web-developer, but mainly for graphics & css/xhtml.

Yes, Drupal can be used for what you are seeking.

You don't provide much detail for anyone to be able to suggest modules to use and such, but there is a plethora in the downloads area.

maybe this will help : Is Drupal right for you?

Good thinking!

I've read the "Is drupal right for you?" a couple of months ago, so I think drupal is for me. I did install drupal on my server in may this year, but I gave up because it was giving me a hard time. I couldn't find a good forum module (I don't like the default very much) back then, and I didn't have time at to dig deeper inte drupal at that point.

I want modules for:

-Forum (similar to the classical php-forums available)
-Comment support (is built in right?)
-Review module (customizeable)
-News module (users can submit news)
-Image support (read that drupal doesn't have that from start?)

Basically, that's what I can think of right now, but I'm sure I'll come up with more things later on.

There have been 3rd party forum scripts that can be added to drupal since before may. Investigate the Downloads area, SMF, PHPBB, FUDforum, are three off the top of my head that can be added. Though be forewarned. Each one offers a different degree of integration and none of them integrate the search feature.

Thus you will have to searches, one for forums, and one for the CMS.

commenting is included in core

review.module is unnecessary, you can create your own content type, and expand the fields capatured using CCK.module and it's addons
news.module is unnecessary, see review.module

correct Drupal does not handle images out of the box , you need to investigate the downloads area , media category and test the image type modules available.
