It would be nice if I could make a rule for disabling checkout panes, so it would be more clear to existing users to log in instead of filling in all the forms.

I realize now that this would involve some ajax to collapse the panes, or reload the checkout form. Any ideas?

I have just released 2.0-beta1 which is almost a full rewrite of the module. It displays the login/register form on a separate pane which removes any confusion about which form fields to fill.
