I think I have it figured out now, but there was a little confusion over whether or not i should use the "raw" versions of tokens or not. If i entered the regular version of the token as part of the path, it would give me a warning at the top that says something along the lines of:
"You are using the token [] which has a -raw companion available [-raw]. For Pathauto patterns you should use the -raw version of tokens unless you really know what you are doing."
However, in the legend, it says, "Warning, raw user input"
These two warnings seem to counter each other.

Which one are we supposed to use?

Why do they say different things?

Did you read the upgrade document and especially the part about pattern changes?

http://groups.drupal.org/node/6706#pattern_changes

Pathauto now uses token which means that there have to be some compromises in Pathauto in the short run while we perfect the system. The token maintainers are working to improve the token API so that some of these confusing messages can be reduced in the future. Until then, we just have to document it as best as possible.
