I want to be able to email all the users of the site to let them know about updates and events for the site. How do I either extract all the emails to use in another email messaging software or create a email message based on role to all users of the site?

hi,

you can use views to create a table listing of all users + profiles.

also have a look at http://drupal.org/project/views_data_export for csv export.
