Is there a way to handle this?

I thought attachments, in nodes or wherever that are private (I'm using taxonomy acces to control access), are private aswell.

No new features are added to old branches so I'm setting this to won't fix. For Drupal 6, there is a privatemsg_attachments module available here: #342733: Create upgrade path from privatemsg_attachments to filefield.
