I want to create a site that the all users can download items from and the authenticated user can also add them. It would just be simple site. Is drupal a good option for this? And if it is, what modules or distribution would I use? I would prefer a distribution as I do not have much experience with drupal.

you don't need a distro, you can use core.
An upload content type with a filefield
give proper permissions to the authenticated user role
