My Drupal version : Drupal 7.16, 2012-10-17

I installed Spark 7.x-1.0-alpha6. Installation was fine but was not able to edit any content. The module just creates a overlay with no UI to change any content.

Removed spark and tried install Spark 7.x-1.0-alpha 7. Nothing shows up in the modules list.
I tried this with alpha 8 too. Same result - nothing in the modules list.

Thanks
Anup

Spark is not a module, it's a distribution. That means it's Drupal core, but it comes with more modules included by default.

Hence it is impossible to install Spark on an existing site. You can install the individual modules that Spark includes though. E.g. http://drupal.org/project/edit.
