Over in #1966218: Infrastructure to support organization accounts we were discussing methods of implementing organization accounts. One idea was to create some "carrots" that encourage honesty among organizations to "out" themselves as organizations, and thus be subject to the stricter permissions of org accounts. Since we can do this irrespective of setting up roles and whatnot, here's a dedicated place to discuss that.
- One suggestion made by Vesa at the DA Board retreat was a page for organizations that lists contributions of their folks, which they can point prospective clients/employees at. Maybe something like http://drupal.org/project/drupalgive tacked onto their organization node page (though not all organizations have organization nodes).
- From time to time I pull queries from the d.o database to bring up a "leaderboard" of companies and their contributions (contrib commits, core patches). It might be neat if there were a public-facing page on Drupal.org that did this, and tracked orgs' performance over time, in a similar way to http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html or something (but much more nicely designed). We'd need to make sure #1968480: Keep historical tracking of users' employers was fixed first, though.

mgiffordI've been looking at ways to add incentives for contributors now for the last two months. There are a lot of options to consider. Not all of them would work, but we do need something to help change trends in community participation.
I do think the idea of "outing" an organization is pretty funny. Although absolutely it's useful to know which individuals are working together. Certainly when Everett was working for me, it was a relevant question which was brought up at some point.
I am interested in knowing more about who is contributing. I think OpenConcept is now contributing over 0.5% of D8 contributions at the moment. Not bad for a small Drupal shop.
I added links to a few issues that are related to this topic. Right now I think that there aren't enough incentives for employers to make this a priority for their staff. I'm a big advocate for more collaboration in Drupal, but I'd be hard pressed to come up with an economic reason why my business should be contributing.
I'd be very interested in the idea of a "leaderboard" of companies, however there are risks involved with adding game mechanics into a community. Would definitely need to be thought through more.
