Adding user pictures no longer possible through theme override

The previous version of this module allowed themers to add details to the buddy activity output before the list of items got generated, for example the friend's picture. Now themers only have access to the already populated list so it's impossible to add pictures or anything without hacking the module. Would it be possible to get that flexibility back by reverting somewhat to the old structure of the theme_activity_page() function?
