I downloaded and enabled the module with drush, but had noting in the update specific pages (admin/config/regional/translate/update and admin/config/regional/language/update).
To have it working I had to disabled and uninstall the module, gave www-data writing permission to the folder /sites/all/modules/l10n_update and reinstalled through the drupal module page (just giving permission without reinstalling the module wasn't enought).
I don't know if the problem was drush or the permissions, but in either cases this info should well go to the documentation.

Thanks for reporting, but I can not reproduce the error and it has not been reported by others. Unless this is reported more often I see no reason to document this behaviour. In any case the conditions under which this problem occurs should become more clear, which also makes it easier to describe the steps to resolve the situation.

Feel free to re-open the issue if you have more information.
