'date' field: what is that ? [#1977162]

Hi all, I have installed 1.8 version and after more "issue" read I have disinstalled it and installed new 2.x-dev version, but now in the "Simple Ad" content type I have a field "date" of type "date/Pop-up calendar". What is this ? I need it ? It is not "end day" (I have a field for that). In "Manage display" section I have:

Display dates using the Long (Tuesday, 23 April, 2013 - 13:50) format
Display both Start and End dates
Show all value(s) starting with earliest, ending with latest

I presumed that field is the start date for the ad in question. There's a checkbox to also show the end date of the ad. Personally, I think it's odd to not have the end date shown by default because unless it's some sort of internal promo ad that will always be in the queue, all ads would have an end date.
