I'm kind of a newbie and have played and doodled a lot with several databases for a few months in order to teach myself the ropes. So, I consider myself pretty adept in the preliminary routine of installing Drupal. But since I upgraded to 5.3, I have started having a peculiar problem. After adding some modules; checking them in Admin >> Modules and confirming, the page freezes. I can see that something happens from the bar in my browser, and it is saying that the loading went ok. But I'm left with a totally blank page.
If I shorten the URL and requests the front page, things do normally unstuck themselves, but at a certain point, I get _nothing but_ blank pages. It has been in the vicinity of me adding the Backup, Signup and RSVP modules, but I'm not sure it's got anything to do with these, or if it's just that I'm at a certain point of database load or somesuch. It seems as if Drupal can only handle 10-15 extra modules before behaving like this. I have spent all day long to get the latest files of everything and copying the READMEs and INSTALL files in a way to easily find them and apply them for every module added, so I'm at the end of the road here.
Even if I delete modules from the server and even the database itself, this freezing will not reverse itself. The only thing is to start from the very scratch, which I have done for six or seven times the last few days. I'm on the brink of leaving Drupal trying to find a more stable program. Please prove me wrong on such a decision...
FYI I run Drupal 5.3 on a G3 iMac OS 10.3.9.

Check your Apache error log;
Check your Apache error log; if this is a PHP error (and usually a White Screen of Death is caused by a PHP error) it should be reported there.
Pete.
Ok, now that's quite over my head
But I guess I'll ask my ISP for that info. Thanks!
Btw, I tried to add more (non-drupal) files last night and the server just wouldn't accept them, so I gather the problem lies in that direction...
Having the same problem
I have the same problem with drupal 5.5 in the midst of installing paypal node module, and node promo code. The white screen of death attacks me everytime I try to add either of these modules.
An issue I had with mine before this all started, is that node promo code module kept asking me to confirm, on the 3rd time it cracked. It was also trying to enable paypal node module, because node promo code depended on it.
I haven't found any anything relevant in the error log either. It is showing only up to November, nothing after that.
Ugh, white screen of death!!!!!
I will let you know what happens.

Check your PHP memory settings.
Go to http://yoursite.com/admin/logs/status/php and check the memory_limit setting; it should be 32Mb or more.
If it's less than this, you're almost certainly running out of PHP memory...
Pete.
believe I found the problem
When I installed paypal node, it came with an error that caused all this.
Pay pal node just recently updated to the next version and the .install file has an error at line 99
which is
It has something to do with that. Any ideas why?
Also I heard the most recommended way to add memeory was add to the .htaccess file this
php_value memory_limit 16M
Though It gave me an error, and I am not sure why. Do I just stick it at the end of the file?
Thanks so much!
So you were able to solve
