Issue Summary
Drupal should have an option to either allow users to input their own password when creating their account, or create them a password which is shown on screen rather than e-mailed. This is needed for intranet sites which don't handle mail, and has been requested in the fora on drupal.org at least twice (e.g. http://drupal.org/node/view/1959).

Drupal now has an option to e-mail a new password and won't send an existing password.

That's still emailing a password, rather than just showing it on screen, as the original poster mentioned?
