One of the things I like about the original workflow module is the workflow access addon.

Is there a node access system that has been integrated with workflow-ng? It's not enough for me to use the publish/unpublish.

No not yet. It's just a question of adding the actions, e.g. as addition to content access or the acl module.

I basically have everything working fine in the other workflow module, but I was interested in building on your system for future development.

Because I'm on a heavy deadline, I can't change that now (sorry), but may take a look in January.
