Something weird I've noticed on a site. I was able to reproduce this on a blank install as well.

To reproduce:

  • Remove $messages from page.tpl.php
  • Enable node_view in page manager.
  • Create a varient which displays the status messages in a pane.
  • Create a new node (with overlay module enabled), save the node and a message will not display.
  • Edit the node (with overlay module disabled), save the node and a message will display.

Quite a quirky one isn't it?
