Hello fellow drupalizers!

So, ive came up with this great idea for a community, with all these ideas on how to make it really fun and addictive place to hang out! And ive been suggested by a highly skilled webcreator (mostly joomla and html/php coding etc). He have never tried drupal but he heard alot about it and got some guys on the office that are skilled with it, and i belive ive come to the right software to do this.

Im pretty average computer using guy, currently studying business systems, ERPS etc etc. After going over about 60 episodes off tutorial on youtube and reading/googling ALOT on creating social networking sites using drupal 7, modules, etc, ive figured this is clearly doable with all my ideas, BUT it seems like a ton of work! Using around 8-10 hours/day on learning drupal i hoped i could finish a pretty basic version of my site after 2 months, but know im not sure.

It would be much appreciated if you guys had some tips on how to learn fast, or where to start rly. Should i just try to create a very small community at first? Publish it and play around with it, or should i buy some of these training videos like ostraining.com?

If i had the money i would pay ppl to do this cause thats how much i belive in this idea, but i dont... And it would also be fun to learn this program cause it seems like an REALLY nice software!

All tips for creating social networking site, learning the basics, modules etc are very much appreciated!

Thanks!
Jimmy

A web site is never complete. They are only complete for now. As you are a one man show, I'd seperate the features into phases/stages.

ye, you are right about that, but i dont barely know where to start first. Alot of ppl lists different modules to use, and activity feed (as facebooks) and groups where you can hold internal competitions is a must, but havent rly figured out how to implent these activites....BUt i guess thats something i can add on later, but what ive figured out i should create the content first, then the design?

I'd wireframe the design first which will hopefully provided the overview needed to know what to build so that you can then ask more concise questions about how to build.

I'd also get Drupal installed so that you can familiarize yourself with core. I find that may new users throw too much into an install at the onset and that doesn't help them up the learning curve.

Hi,

Did you come across this book in your research?

Disclaimer: I've not read it.

It might at least help to give you some ideas about how to get where you want to go?

Hi Jimmy

I bumped into this post as I work for OSTraining and saw our name mentioned.

I think our videos are good, but I'll be realistic ... if you've never used Drupal before, then going from being a complete beginner to creating a great site will take longer than 2 months.

Partly this is because there's a lot to learn in Drupal, but also it's partly because of the range of skills you need:

  • Drupal knowledge
  • Theming skills
  • Coding skills at least good enough to help you shoot bugs

That's just to build the site, not to make it successful. Then the business and marketing skills kick in.

Sorry, if I'm being a downer, but we help a lot of people to learn Drupal and one of our major tasks is helping people get a realistic understanding of how long it will take.

Personally, I like the idea that you mentioned of creating a very small community at first. You need somewhere to learn and building your first site is a great place to start.
