In Twig we can dump the value of _context to discover any variable that a template knows about. It would be very helpful if we put a commend into the header of every theme that tells the themer about this trick.
My thinking is that this trick will be so useful to everyday development that it should be in the comment of every template. I imagine the new themer that has never done any Drupal theming before. The first place their going to discover help for theming is the theme file their trying to override. We should provide that new themer the quick help they're looking for by including the tactics they'll be using for basic theme development.

star-szrI can see this happening in a contrib theme maybe but I'd rather keep core clean, personally…
Bumping to 8.1.x because we could add this later in core.

smustgrave commentedThank you for creating this issue to improve Drupal.
We are working to decide if this task is still relevant to a currently supported version of Drupal. There hasn't been any discussion here for over 8 years which suggests that this has either been implemented or is no longer relevant. Your thoughts on this will allow a decision to be made.
Since we need more information to move forward with this issue, the status is now Postponed (maintainer needs more info). If we don't receive additional information to help with the issue, it may be closed after three months.
Thanks!
