Adding a # to a menu item, to make it a category sort of

I have a Drop down menu built around a new menu block . it works fine but any menu item is required to have a Path. so I tried putting # in there just to activate the drop down but its not working. drupal is converting # into encoded form.. anyone got a solution.? i tried javascript:; too but same thing. these pages do not link to anywhere.
