Accessing submenus (for example About / Subpage on the demo) works on a larger screen with a mouse and a narrow screen where the horizontal menu turns into a menu button.

But on my Android tablet (using Firefox) it is not possible to select a subpage because (using About / Subpage on the demo as an example) you have to touch the About button for the sub-menu to show, but in doing so you are taken to the "About" page without being able to use the submenu.

Is there any way to fix this behaviour?

Your best bet would be to install the Superfish module (this theme uses the superfish.js file within the .info and that is all), then you will have complete control of all those features: http://drupal.org/project/superfish
