I'm a little worried about this one since it seems like it's hard to get people to agree on icons (at least that's the impression I get from reading http://groups.drupal.org/node/6422)

Also, would the student need to create the icons himself, or could he propose icons taken from a GPL source of icons? How big should the icons be? Should they be theme neutral? etc.

I'll add to the Task description: The icons should be theme neutral and the size should range around those used by TinyMCE and FCKEditor nstance. It is preferred the icons are created from scratch but they can be based on GPL-licensed icons as well, or be completely derived from it (please provide a link to where you got them if you do).

To be honest, you could use the default icons for the editor or use a popular free set like Silk or Mini from famfamfam.

Although it's really good-looking and is gaining popularity by the day, the famfamfam Silk icon set uses the Creative Commons by-2.5 license, which isn't strictly compatible with GPLv2.

The Wysiwyg implementation for Drupal 7 went another direction.
