Description
At one time a module existed that allowed site admins to provide a customizable block to users who maintained personal blogs on the site. In other words, a blogroll.
This module has fallen by the way, but as Drupal becomes the platform for larger social networking sites, such a module would likely see heavy use.
Create from scratch such a module, allowing the site admin to limit the types of content allowed in such a block.

As with http://groups.drupal.org/node/7530, there are many ways to create a blogroll. The module you're referring to (latest version: 4.6) used an extra table to keep track of the blogrolls. I feel that a good way to go is cck + links and creating a block out of each such content type.
I think the most important question is: are you willing to mentor the student technically? Feel free to put me on this if you don't have the time.
