Dreamhost --- quit the field?
I deal with several hosting sites one them being Dreamhost, which graciously host my non profit for free. at first I decided on joomla, but i decided to put nearly all my sites with Drupal so I could get better and more efficient at how a cms works. I did notice that when they offer automatic scrips to install software Drupal was not there, and the drupal/dreamhost wiki has a rather sarcastic/snarky attitude about installing it. I am planning on running a fairly active site, although catered to a local audience.
perhaps I should install something else? if so, should i pick wordpress or joomla?

I've been using Dreamhost
I've been using Dreamhost for almost 2 years now, and I plan to move on January. My main reasons:
1. Slow page loads. I've read somewhere on this forum that it's because Dreamhost hosts MySQL databases on separate servers.
2. The max_upload limit is capped at 2MB. I tried the htacces workaround, couldn't get the limit past 4MB. Now supposedly one can alter the php.ini settings, but I'd rather not touch that if I can help it.
2.a. Large uploads are necessary for me. My clients use a lot of music and video. I want Drupal not just to help me be a more efficient admin, but also to empower clients to update their websites themselves.
If you plan on adding community/social networking features to your site, I really think you should stick with Drupal, instead of choosing another CMS just to be able to stay with Dreamhost.
I think you will find many
I think you will find many hosts will offer discounts for nonprofits, or you could use a web hosting coupon to reduce costs. Any host offering Fantastico will provide Drupal auto-installation.

Many thanks to jaku ayala
Many thanks to jaku ayala and info warp for answering my question. I guess I will work on building the site and move it next year if needs be. no money to move it right now.
