I have looked really hard for an answer to this and cannot find it.

I want to provide an option in the user registration for a user to enter the url they want their profile to have. I want this to be separate from the user name so I can provide different guidelines (like 'no spaces' etc...).

The easiest way to do this would be if I could select a single line field from profile to use as the user name. If this is possible, I would be very grateful. Something like was done on adrenelinehub.com (a drupal site) and it's available on myspace.

I don't see how this is related to Pathauto so I'm reassigning it. Sorry, I'm not sure what your problem is or how to help you, so I can't provide any more advice.
