I have seen this at work too. Some use email just like IM or IRC chat, with abbreviations, all lowercase, ...etc.
Sad, but happening.
Of course, not everyone who uses Chat/IM fall into this. People who do not learn how to express themselves according to the medium cause this issue. Those who adjust to the medium have no problems.

Answer: Your talking about the shortening of each node when u look at a list/category of nodes (nodes=ur content). You can change this by going into admin/content/configure(inside the page on top right)/ then lengthen the trimmed posts pulldown box to whatever limit u want
remember this is characters(a letter), not words.
