When setting the Avatar Selection role (e.g.: "authenticated user" checkbox) the choice is stored in avatar_selection. However if I bring up the edit form again, "authenticated user" does not seem to be checked.

This is actually a problem with Drupal 5.x core. I opened up an issue on it, #149510, which was then marked a duplicate of #144482 but there is still no solution.

#149510: multipage forms and checkbox default values has been marked as won't fix, so there's not much I can do here.
