What version of Views_Bonus is required? I tried 3 different versions but each time, the installation halts and says that the Views_Bonus module is unavailable.

You'll need views_bonus version 5.x-1.0 http://drupal.org/node/97013 or apply this patch http://drupal.org/node/171949 to use more recent versions.
