I have noticed, that even when I set adsense to show text and image ads, Image ads never showed up. I think it's because Adsense module generates some old type of Adsense code. Not to mention, that recently Google started with absolutely new type of adsense code, but I thought that the old one should still work.

Google is the one that decides when to place text ads or image ads. If you look at your adsense code it should show google_ad_type = "text_image"

New ad codes are now supported by the 5.x-3.x branch
