Hi!

I just found out about Drupal a few days ago and I have been reading my behind off in here. I am running a Joomla site and am thinking of changing in to another CMS, or maybe not.

My websites heart and soul is the forum and articles but I want to develop it more towards a community site and only thing Joomla can offer is community builder. From what I have seen it’s not that great at all.

After reading in here it seems like all CMS are very different and the choice depends on the needs (of course :D),

I write in short what I am after, and I hope that someone can give me a word of advice.

• Easy handling of articles and news.
• Community platform like Xing
• Forum (VBulletin seems like a good idea).
• Project management module like projectplace.com.
• Web shop.

I only want one log in to all the features and more things will be added in the future. A lot more…

I am very picky with what I want and have a hard time to accept when I don’t get to have it my way. That happens too often with Joomla and even if I am prepared to pay someone for new extensions it seems like it’s too difficult.

Maybe CMS is not the thing for me and I should develop my own platform or do you guys think Drupal can save the day?

Thanks in advance, and marry Christmas all!

The short answer is yes, you can do all of the things you wish. The learning curve is somewhat steep, but Drupal is very intuitive and after you grasp the essence of the script, you will be able to move fast and in the end you will be very satisfied.

Thank you for a quick reply!

The thing that worries me is the project feature. It will also include some things that can be found in Google Apps . I also forgot to mention that in the near future I want to create a module like Elance.com, but much smaller of course.

This change anything?

Drupal can create discrete, collaborative spaces inside a website. This is done using a variety of existing modules, working individually, and synergestically with each other. It is nothing short of remarkable to see this happen. But, as I said, you need to do a lot of reading. Good luck.

Thanks a lot bwv for your answers!

Since I am not a programmer I will hire someone to do this for me. I am just trying to figure out what platform to use.
Seems like Drupal will be the one for me. I love the fact that I can fully integrate vBulletin with Drupal :D

I only created very simple websites before where nothing could go wrong. This one will be huge I guess and I want to make sure that I will get it the way I want.
Would it be possible to create the design first and then add the codes behind? I did this with a Joomla site and ran in to some problems. I had to change some of the design to make Joomla work according to the programmer.

Try to build this yourself. You will laugh to yourself once you realize that "programming" is not involved. It takes a little nerve to make the jump, but once you do, you will not regret it.

As for the design, pick a theme from the scores of same that are available. There is bound to be one that you like. Or, worst case, with a little tweaking of the CSS, you can take an existing design/layout that is only mildly offensive and transform it into a thing of beauty.
