paid event module available?

we organise course/conferences for medical professionals. just now gettting around to having online booking and reservation. which modules(s) could we use for this?

i tried 'fee' module. and lm subscriptions. both ok, but lacking. 'fee' puts this large banner over the entire site when the user hasnt paid. dont like that. and lm subscriptions isnt event based; cant find a way to send automatic notifications for approaching course dates.

i actually dont need much in fact, and could live with either of those, but wonder if there is an existing 'better way'.
