Hi,

I am looking to lock a cck field in a user profile so only those of a special role (membership secretary) can update the membership start date and number of years of membership fields. In this way we can use profiles as a membership database.

It seemed from the description that field permissions can do this but the config doesn't seem to allow it... am I missing something, is it a designed limitation or a bug?

It's sort of possible, but a few rather serious bugs prevents this module from being a recommended alternative yet if your main goal is to control editing and not viewing of data.
