UK based hosting for Drupal websites?
dizara - December 30, 2007 - 12:08
Hi,
I am quite new in Drupal so excuse my possibly obvious question.
What I could not work out is why people look for UK based hosting company as opposed to US ones when hosting Drupal websites. US ones are way less expensive.
Does it have to do with some legal matters, esp. if a commercial website is hosted? Or it is just a personal preference?
Many thanks
Alex

I am not sure, but I have a
I am not sure, but I have a few overseas clients with commercial enterprises who use US based webhosts and they are very satisfied. I work with one UK-based hosting service on behalf of a client and am recommending my client move elsewhere (to a US based service) as the service, capabilities, and responsiveness of the UK-based host are, not to put too fine a point on it, abysmal.

Customers in UK
Because their customer base is in the UK and they don't want all their traffic passing through transoceanic and/or sat links.
Granted being on a good host in the US would be better than a sucky one in the UK, but being on a good host in the UK would be better still.
Another thing to consider is many companies schedule "regular maintenance" at off times -- around 2-4am in the morning. If your customer base is in the UK, and you're hosted in the US, your "scheduled maintenance window" is going to be like smack in the middle of the morning/early afternoon from your perspective.

UK Hosting
Many thanks guys for your answers.
I just was not sure whether there is any legal issues when choosing UK or US hosts. But if it is only maintainance that's ok with me.
What is the disadvantage of transoceanic traffic though? Is there anything else appart from the fact that it might be slower?
Regards
Alex
Not sure if its slower
Not sure if its slower necessarily in all cases; a client of mine in Hong Kong uses a US-based web host and the response time is instantaneous.

There is no obvious
There is no obvious disadvantage of transoceanic traffic. Nowadays, even the speed factor isn't a huge disadvantage as network connections are getting better and better.
VPS Hosting
just incase
incase anyone else comes on this thread, just wanted to say, yes there is some issues regarding data in the UK.
This is what I think:.........................
1. By law your not allowed to hold the identifiable data of UK citizens, outside UK.
2. But you may consider the following, if you have a shopping cart for example, which forwards your customer to paypal, then theres no information held on the database of your hosting provider, so the data is processed and held by PAYPAL so its not really your problem.
However, saying that, I know some shopping carts, after the customer pays for the goods, paypal sends the data back to the website, which in return stores the information on the website, so that the website owner can see a summary of the SOLD GOODS, with informations for shipping etc.
So, make sure you know what data your website holds.
Just my views.
