Looking to create a Drupal video website, and will probably use FFMPEG to convert the videos to Flash. At present I'm using Siteground as my host. If I want FFMPEG from them, I have to get my own server. I've talked to someone at Cirtex Hosting, which seems to offer FFMPEG as part of their basic package. Are there any other companies out there that offer FFMPEG? Any of them recommended?

Check out
IX Webhosting and Thinkhost. They have support for ffmpeg.I host sites on both and they are good.

site5 also supports FFMPEG

what i can tell you from my experience is, that if you are using FFMPEG and you are building a community site, it won't take long before you are shudown for too much resource usage on a shared host, if video uploading becomes popular.

Good to know about the bandwidth issue. The plan for the site is to make it a demo, with potential future commercial applications. I don't think bandwidth will be an issue now, but it could develop later down the line. Also didn't think I needed a whole server to myself yet, which is why I'm not interested in using Siteground. Will check out the other hosts to see what they offer.

not just bandwidth. FFMPEG takes some RAM to convert audio & video.

It's also CPU intensive and shared hosting plans usually have fairly low limits on both RAM and CPU usage. IMO, Siteground is doing the right thing by not allowing/offering FFMPEG on a shared server plan. It's both a disservice to other people who are sharing the host server with you and to you when you get shut off because you are exceeding your alloted resource usage. A lot of shared hosting companies offer tons of bandwidth and hd space because they know you will run up on other limits before you use up the limits that they do advertise in large print.

Initially, a VPS may be a cost effective option until you can justify a dedicated server. Just make sure you get one with enough memory and find out what kind of hardware the VPS is running on, including CPUs, and what share of the CPU you are guaranteed.

Unless your familiar with compiling apps, you may want to find out if they will install it for you too. Just make sure the codecs you need are compiled into FFMPEG.

I think a VPS with FFMPEG support would be ideal for your requirements.

Wanted to build my own youtube clone, many companies said is too server intensive, only a handful of them offer ffmpeg hosting for shared hosting, here's the list: http://www.ffmpeg-hosting.com/
And yes, watch for the bandwidth, in a week I ate 250GB like nothing!
