LightboxV2 and jQuery Lightbox seem to very largely overlap (if not exactly duplicate)
It would be cool to have them merge, instead of having users wonder 'OK, which one is best'.

I also posted the suggestion on the jQuery Lightbox issue queue.

Hi,

I would agree and I think it would be better if the two modules were merged. We were quite disappointed when the jLightbox module was released without any consultation with us first, especially since we had almost completed our efforts with a similar port. See #175819 for more info on how the jQuery lightbox module came about, and #198988 for a similar discussion of this issue.

I think the two modules are fundamentally the same. However, I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that the Lightbox V2 module has more features than the jLightbox module. The extra features include (but not limited to) more configuration options, including a "lite" jQuery independent version, an alternative lightbox layout, zoom button for larger images, page exclusion capability, etc. Incorporating these extra features into the jLightbox module could be more difficult than incorporating it into the Lightbox2 module. I'm not sure that the jLightbox module has any additional features but iirc it has no configuration page at all, which may or may not be advantageous to some users.

I would imagine that the Lightbox V2 module also has more users, due to the fact that it has been around longer and the issue queue seems more active, but perhaps someone with access to module download statistics can comment better here.

If we merge the two modules, one of the modules will obviously cease to exist, which may cause upgrade problems to the existing users, etc. How does one handle the merge process easily and effectively so as to minimise the impact to the users?

For reference, here's the other issue you opened in the jlightbox issue queue: #205908.

Cheers,
Stella

Marking as "postponed" because I'm away for the next month and the maintainer of the "jlightbox" module hasn't responded to this request after 8 weeks of being open.

Cheers,
Stella

+1 for a merge

+1 for merge

A first step would be to link from one modules page to the other as well as to the other modules with similar functionality like thickbox.

+1 For merge. Any update since the first posts by the beginning of 2008?
An auto upgrade path could be tricky to get 100% right, what about not doing that just to get the merge moving?

Hi Stella
What ever happened to the discussion between you and sun? The link in #7 provide not any news and was auto closed back in oct 2008.

Keep up the good work!
Cheers
Stein

Sun is now a co-maintainer of the Lightbox2 module, and we hope to merge the two of them soon.

+1 for merge as well.

this assuming Lightbox would be better off with the more supported jQuery lib.

lightbox2 module already uses the jquery library. We're looking at merging various lightbox solutions for Drupal 7 in starbox module (http://drupal.org/project/starbox)

Well, but there is just the announcement of the API. No module in sight yet? None of the box modules seem to migrate to D7. Is that really true? I guess that'll be an issue for D7 then.

i know colorbox has a 7.x-dev version
http://drupal.org/project/colorbox

colorbox is the replacement for thickbox
however many projects still use thickbox, hence any API would be very useful (think of WYSIWYG)

personally, i usually use lightbox more often than it's alternatives
