"filed" (past tense of file: "place in a file") is admittedly not great, but is more accurate than "filled".

Unless there is a better word than "filed", I think this is by design.

I think that this means "fill in", not "place in a file", therefore it's really a typo, but an english native speaker should confirm this...setting status back until resolved.

No, 'filed' is correct in that sentence.

Alternatively, it could read something like:
'New feed items are automatically added to the selected categories.'
