Just letting douggreen aware of that I'm gonna help out with this module.

Features:

* Port nicedit to jquery, so it can be core worthy
* Make custom buttons from the admin interface
* produce valid XHTML

also, I think that fckeditor and tinymce are both overkill and not that graceful as they rely on 3. party software. So that's why I'll decide to help out. Let's get it into core (by D7).

This is still a 3rd party product, albeit one that better fits our needs, that doesn't already have a big following, and that I think/hope we can mold. But, before we start writing our own, we should decide if we're going to stick with it as a 3rd party plugin, or are we going to try and get it relicensed to GNU and then modify the source to our needs.

As for the Drupal core worthiness, it's going to need some re-licensing, and some re-writing. We're going to have to work with Brian, the original author. You can contact him through http://bkirchoff.com. I'm going to ask someone at CivicActions to open up the dialog, and work with him on this.

I'm told that nicEdit is already under "the most permissive license out there," and that it is compatible with GPL v2. This advise from Henry and George at CivicActions, who both know this stuff much better than me, give me some comfort to push forward with using nicEdit as we'd like, and that it will be licensable for Drupal core.

That sounds good. jQuery was originally licensed under MIT and then dual licensed under the GPL (after the some drupal guys asked John Resig).

Could we at least ask the guy and hear if he could dual license under GPL? He will gain much by doing so, as ten thousands will be using his work..even so if was to be rewritten to be compatible with jQuery.

He said he'd be willing to do that. But based on the conversation thread we had about this, I think it's premature, and maybe not even necessary.

I spoke to the author of nicedit and he seems to be very excited that his work may be included in the drupal 7 core. I will do everything I can to help get this done!

For what it's worth, I'd love to see nicEdit in core and I'm sure many others would too.

As already mentioned over at http://buytaert.net/state-of-drupal-2008-survey, I'd strongly vote against ONE editor in core - instead core should support ANY client-side editor. That's the primary goal of what a few folks are trying to achieve in the Wysiwyg API project. Anything else, i.e. implementing just one editor, would be very un-drupalish. You are very welcome to join the efforts.

Marking as fixed, because this issue does not seem to have any goals.
