Sorry if this is an obvious question, but I'd prefer to show full blog posts, stories, and pages when they get promoted to the front page, instead of showing a paragraph or so and making the user click on "Read More". How do I change the settings?

administer >> content management >> post settings. you want set the "length of trimmed posts" to unlimited. note that this is a "this point forward" setting; you will have to edit/submit existing pages to regenerate the teaser.

also note that you have the option to manually control the teaser break

To make the changes in post settings take affect for older content

you can unpublish the content, then publish the content. This picks up the new post settings.
