How cool would it be to award users with icons (as possible with vBulletin) that appear in their profile, comments and/or posts and can be considered trophies or medals. For example, once they have posted x amount of articles they will not only be awarded user points but also have a little pencil trophy added to their name, or after buying a product they are awarded with a little money trophy.

You could even turn your site into a treasure hunt sort of game by adding an icon to the users collection when a certain "secret" page is visited.

You can already do such customizations in the theme.
