I branched http://cyberocity.com to allow me to set up multiple open source applications, as a showcase, more or less, and to further acceptance for open source solutions for business. The area I'm in is near a large college, well 2 actually, and there are a surprising number of professors, administrators, and graduate students who are pretty much owned by large corporations. One college buys all it's hardware from a large manufacturer who 'just happened' to locate a key facility close by. Large corporations donate so much in this area that you can't even critisize microsoft, for example, without someone getting upset with you.
So, it's an uphill struggle here, but I was wondering if anypne had any ideas for candidates of open source applications to set up in a little showcase to show to local businessmen here who are afraid to even say the word in public.
Thanks,
LeBlank

great concept
I view Drupal and PostNuke as being ideal for any business that wants to reach new costomers online. In fact, there are several bloggers working on spreading the word about this.
News Feeds are the epitomy of viral marketing, the stories get shared and referenced all over the globe, each post leads the viewer back tot he main site.
WordPress was also super easy to install and begin operating.
The hard part is convincing the business owner that they can and should be maintaining and updating their sites themselves. They know their business better than anyone. The time spent learning the software will be returned in the time not wasted waiting for a webmaster or technician to respond to a request.
I have a friend that already has a lot of information regarding this. I'll forward your post to him.
If you need me to desing a demo on one of the platforms let me know.
Thank you
That's a good point about businesses maintaining their own. I have seen one recently go through this process. They ended up with a friend endorsing a friend of the friend who was supposed to teach them to eventually maintain their own.
The having to wait is a very good point. The counter point is the serious lack of confidence many people have in their own ability to learn. That's always been the big club for commercial software. "We'll do it all for you, don't worry."
Thanks for the offer, I may take you up on that |-)

have a look
Maybe you would be interested in looking at: Open source CMS.com. They maintain a fairly large list of open source tools. Maybe you could filter that list and present one with the ones you consider best suited?
Yes I will ...
... take a look. I guess i was just sort of haphazardly picking applications at random. I really should make a list or use theirs as a list as you suggest. Thanks for pointing out the link.
So far I have a web calendar and drupal, along with php, mysql, and apache links of course. i'm thinking about an online teaching app and a shopping cart next. Maybe Zen cart. Thanks again!
