What modules to use: Media Management, Blog entries on front page, etc...

traemccombs - January 10, 2008 - 14:46

Howdy gang,

I'm a Graphics guy and do CSS but a client has asked me the following questsions:

# image and document library: where is the media manager functionality that allows the site manager to upload docs and images into a library, shows links, etc.?

# how do you set up a page where there is a lot of repetitive information such as the staff list or news items? I’ve read a bit about CCK, but not sure how it work.

# how does the client upload an image to be used on the site? Using the WYSIWYG editor? If so, where do those images go?

# how can we output the most recent n entry titles for the blog so that we can have those appear on the home page?

What's the best route to go on these?
Thanks in advance!

Sincerely,
Trae McCombs

help from Kbahey....

Khalid, a friend of mine gave me this help in a gmail IM. We wanted it here so others could read it too:

1. check asset or asset manager module, as well as media manager modules. there is also something called webfm (more file oriented)

2. if staff are drupal users, then you can use the bio module, plus cck, then use views to display lists any way you like

3. there are multiple ways, depending on which module you use from the list in 1 (img_assist is one that the image module uses, webfm has its own thing i think)

4. promote the blogs to the front page and they will appear there. but, if you want other stuff on the front page, you can use panels, and put which ever thing you want there

Followup questions from JM.

Here is the followup reply he had....

The only media manager module that I found was something that was in beta and it seemed geared more towards automatically assigning the media call wrapper (eg., the flash swfobject or the quicktime wrapper, etc.) than managing assets.

I’ll search for asset manager.

I haven’t been able to find CCK for ver 5, have you?

Also, in the blog, is there a way to have it just show the titles and an excerpt on the front page and the full monty when you click (the way you normally do on a blog)?

Any luck with asset manager?

CCK 5
http://drupal.org/project/cck CCK 5 (download @ bottom of page)

And if you create blog entries that are promoted to the front page, you can use CSS to style out the bits you don't want / need.
