hi all,
its great to hear that nw release of drupal is now final.and in its modules list i found a great module named frontpage.
im currently testing drupal last 4.5 release.
i wanna home page which looks like to this one:

specifically, i'd like to know how he managed to create top categoty listing in center area (content are) of the page.
can someone provide me some good tips on how i can achive these things?

Several approaches
1. Wait for this feature to be finalized.
2. Use phptemplate and design the page the way you like and include content anywhere you like, using php and SQL queries.
3. Use front page (not sure if it supports php or not).

I think that top center content area is the mission statement. You might try a search, I believe there is a brief overview on the site implementation somewhere in the forums.
