With stock quicktags with no patches, using quicktagplus disabled, the text "Array" is output into the section of of the html. Still happens after applying the patch to correct text area labels and patch to allow configuring where it's displayed. I think it still happens with quicktagsplus enabled also.

This sounds like a duplicate of http://drupal.org/node/200706 which itself is a derivative of http://drupal.org/node/198326
There is a patch at the second location which may fix your issue. Open the module in a plain text editor and look at line 124 to check what is there.
