I have seen the highslide JS http://vikjavev.no/highslide/#examples : it's simply amazing!
Quick, multi-document, multimedia, new, not specially for photos, the only problem it's not free and doesn't use JQuery:

What do you think about? Does a guru starting a adaptating for JQuery/Drupal?

Lightbox and Thickbox are better for photo_gallery, imho.

I've done it on my site @ http://www.pinottinet.com/web but there seems to be a conflict between jQuery and Highslide, since the zoom effect works great on IE and Opera but is broken in FF. Nevertheless, if I remove the "jquery.js" script all works again.
