Since http://drupal.org/node/136837 was applied in June , the DRUPAL-5-cache-serialize.patch doesn't apply

Change that breaks the patch

Here's a patch that should work for DRUPAL-5-2 to DRUPAL-5-6, with an offset in bootstrap.inc, depending on which version you're patching.

Closing as obselete. memcache 5.x-1.7 works fine with the included patches.
