How to automatically trigger state change in Workflow module

Hi guys, is it possible to trigger a change in workflow state automatically? E.g. after being redirected back to the page, we grab the referrer URL and if it matches http://paypal.com then the state of the node gets changed from Pending to Payment Received. Thanks
