Now, I am getting really confused about what to do to make this work.
I have a drupal installation with 5.3 and on with 5.6.
I have downloaded both comment_info and comment_notify.
What shall I do, patch and/or download to make the notify-function work?

I agree - it can be confusing. I suggest you try the 5.x-1.x-dev release. If that works for you, great. If not, please post back with the specific problem you have (the steps to repeat and error messages are very helpful).

It worked instantly when trying to do it whit the .dev
